unBox to Unlock - The Complete, Easiest Guide for your iPhone and iPod Touch

Section 1 - What is your iPhone version and its current status??
Connect your iPhone or iPod Touch into itunes and check what version you have.

(1-0) Brand-new, virgin 1.02 and want to stay at 1.02? - Skip to Section (2-0) to perform the jailbreak and unlock on your 1.02 phone.

(1-1) Brand-new, virgin 1.1.1? - Skip to section (2-1) to jailbreak and activate your 1.1.1 phone.

(1-2) iPod Touch Users - Make sure you are at 1.1.1, otherwise update to it and skip to section (2-1)

(1-3) Updating from 1.02 to 1.1.1

  • If your 1.02 is brand new, never unlocked or you used Anysim 1.1 or IphoneSimFree to unlock, just update it within the latest version of iTunes and go to section (2-1).
  • If you used anything but Anysim 1.1.1 or IphoneSimFree (that includes iunlock, anysim 1.02, etc) to unlock your 1.02 phone, you MUST virginize your phone before upgrading to 1.1.1 to save a lot of headaches.
  • Please read Bigboss\Xmod's guide located here. Note: if you updated to the latest Installer, look under Section (4-1) to see how to add the new repository. You MUST add this repository otherwise you will not see the virginize scripts or Anysim 1.1.
  • After running the virginize scripts, you can safely update to 1.1.1 with the latest version of itunes and then go to section (2-1).

(1-4) Updated to 1.1.1 from a bad 1.02 unlock (without virginizing) and now its bricked and have a bad IMEI #?

  • Read Bigboss\Xmod's Guide Here to downgrade back to 1.02 and fix your problems.
  • After downgrading and virginizing, you can safely update back to 1.1.1, if you wish, and proceed to section (2-1)

Section 2 - Jailbreaking and Activation
Jailbreaking will open up the iPhone's filesystem to other FREE 3rd-party applications. Activation is only needed if you are not using AT&T service on an iPhone, no activation is needed on an iPod Touch.

(2-0) Jailbreaking and Activating on 1.02 (Windows or Mac needed)

  • Windows Users: Download 1.02 apptapp at nullriver and run it to install, it will jailbreak within the process of installing installer.
  • Windows Users: Download and run Paycay (thanks bigboss and xmods for the host), this will activate your phone.
  • Mac Users: Download and run Independance.
  • Once completing the Jailbreak and activation, you can proceed to section (3-0) if you want to unlock, otherwise you are Done!

(2-1) Jailbreaking and Activating on 1.1.1 iPhone\Touch- The Fastest and Easiest Way (No PC needed! Must have WiFi)

  • If you are an iPod Touch user or a legit AT&T iphone subscriber, just activate your phone from iTunes and go to jailbreakme.com in mobile safari.
  • If you are planning on not using AT&T and another provider (or none at all), read and perform the steps found at appsnapp to get mobile safari up and running on your unactivated iPhone. Make sure to turn off wifi security for the time being.
  • Once in mobile safari, go to jailbreakme.com and follow the steps.
  • After everything is done, you should be jailbroken, activated, and installer app should be on your home screen.
  • Once completing the Jailbreak and activation, you can proceed to section (3-0) if you want to unlock, otherwise you are Done!

No Wifi? - Get Wifi. Both carnaval, Independance, and the above methods for 1.1.1 need wifi connection. Remember to turn off the security for now until you get everything working on your iPhone.

(2-3) Jailbreaking and Activating on 1.1.1 - Less Automatic Way
These programs will require a computer and will take a little longer to jailbreak and activate, good for troubleshooting.

  • Windows users: Download and run Carnaval.
  • Mac Users: Download and run Independance.

    Section 3 - Unlocking
If you want to use your iPhone on a carrier other than AT&T, you must perform an unlock to use a non-AT&T sim card in the phone.

    (3-0) Unlocking on 1.02 and 1.1.1

  • Once you are using the latest version of Installer app (Version 3.0 beta), install Community Sources, then go to Sources at the bottom right, Click edit at the top right corner, and then click add at the top right corner and type in this url: http://markmon.mine.nu:90/iphone/repo/repo.plist. If you are using the old Installer 2.0, you can just enter the url in Safari.
  • Refresh the sources and find Anysim 1.1 and install it.
  • For the time being, go to settings, general, and turn off Auto-Lock.
  • Run the the app and your phone should now be unlocked!
    Done!

Section 4 - Misc Info and Facts

(4-0) So you're done jailbreaking, activating, and unlocking, now what?

  • First thing to do is go back into Installer and install BSD Subsystem and Summerboard. Installer is your main source of 3rd party applications. Suggested apps: ToDoList, Appolo IM, SendSong, Services, Navizon, Sodoku, iflickr, iSplit, Customize, Sketches, weDict + Merriam Webster, and Labyrinth. These apps have been tested to work in 1.1.1.
  • If you are using 1.1.1, do not mess around with the image changing option in Customize app, it could severely mess up your iphone to the point of restore. You can use rSBT(icon location) within customize though.
  • Summerboard allows you have pages in 1.1.1 and also allows you to change themes and how the homescreen looks.
  • A good read: http://www.tuaw.com/2007/10/29/iphone-101-youve-got-iphone-or-ipod-touch-jailbreak-what-next/
  • Remember to turn back on Auto-lock :)
  • A little fact: your iPhone earbuds is a REMOTE also! Click the little mic once to pick up or disconnect a call. When playing music, tap it once to pause, and tap it twice to skip to the next song.

    (4-1) Adding Community Sources

  • Once you are using the latest version of Installer app (Version 3.0 beta), install Community Sources, then go to Sources at the bottom right, Click edit at the top right corner, and then click add at the top right corner and type in this url: http://markmon.mine.nu:90/iphone/repo/repo.plist. There isn't a Safari Plugin yet.
  • If you are using the old Installer 2.0, you can just enter the url in Safari, since there is a plugin.
